Mal-Kelai is a fortified outpost positioned at the eastern edge of the Dural Hills, where the terrain descends into the expansive wilderness of the Telenkar Fold. Though located within the bounds of the Dural Hills, the outpost exists primarily to observe and manage movement into the uninhabited Fold. It functions as a monitoring and staging station for Stonewarden patrols and researchers assessing large-scale wildlife patterns and geological shifts.
Geography
Built on a raised ridge with direct sightlines across the upper Fold, Mal-Kelai overlooks a wide bend of the central river that cuts through the landscape. The surrounding hills are dry and uneven, scattered with loose rock and brush. The outpost is partially recessed into the stone for wind protection, with a flat roofline adapted for signal use and distant observation.
History
The site was established during regional stabilization efforts following increased reports of Slateback Behemoth activity along the river basin. Initially a temporary relay station, it was expanded into a permanent outpost following the Council of Stone's classification of the Fold as a restricted ecological zone. Mal-Kelai now serves as the primary access point to the region and maintains formal clearance protocols.
Functions and Features
- Gatehold Chamber – Entrance screening area for supply caravans and field personnel.
- East Wall – Reinforced observation tier overlooking the Fold's descent.
- Signal Spur – Relay post connected to Reth-Vareth and Telenkar Hold.
- Internal Barracks – Small quarters for rotational staff and short-term deployment teams.
Culture and Ritual
Interaction at Mal-Kelai is minimal and procedural. Personnel are rotated from Kar-Thal or Reth-Vareth on fixed terms, and communication with other sites is conducted primarily through coded signal tones. Travel into the Fold is permitted only with sanctioned purpose and escort.
Threats and Dangers
The primary concern is large-scale fauna movement—particularly the presence of Slateback Behemoths. Secondary risks include seasonal river flooding, terrain collapse along the ridge line, and atmospheric instability during convergence periods. The outpost is not designed for combat, and full evacuation protocols are in place in case of direct threat.
