The Stonewardens are a civic-militant order of Orasians charged with the protection, stability, and ritual governance of the earth-aligned realm of Terasil. Unlike conventional soldiers, Stonewardens are attuned to the resonance of the land itself—trained in harmonic defense, seismic manipulation, and the containment of spiritual unrest. They are not simply guardians, but stewards of Oras’s physical memory, sworn to uphold balance through patience, endurance, and force when required.
History
The Stonewarden order emerged during the late Era of Isolation, initially as a ceremonial corps of tunnel guardians and ritual stone-setters. Their role expanded significantly following the Great Erosion, when seismic instability and spiritual disruption necessitated the creation of a formalized earthbound defense. With the founding of the Council of Stone, the Stonewardens were appointed as its arm of enforcement and structural integrity.
Their duties expanded again during the sealing of the Stillborn Flame Tunnels and the early conflicts with rogue deep-mining factions. Over time, they evolved into a disciplined, oath-bound order responsible for the physical and spiritual protection of Terasil’s core.
Structure and leadership
The Stonewardens are organized into a series of concentric circles, each defined by depth of service and harmonic alignment. The highest authority is the Ward-Circle of the Inner Echo, composed of seven senior wardens chosen through resonance trials and ancestral alignment.
Training begins at local strongholds under the guidance of resonance-forgers and oath-instructors. Advancement is earned through both service and ritual trial, including endurance rites, subterranean navigation, and echo harmonization.
Major settlements and strongholds
- Kar-Thal – Home to the central barracks and resonance forges within Stone's Hold.
- Dul-Val – A southern stronghold guarding the Tarsuun Pass.
- Kelrun-Kar – A fortified convergence site in the Deep Roads, serving as a seismic relay and rest hall.
- Vaults of Stillwake – A silent subterranean redoubt used for spiritual recovery and post-trial meditation.
Relations with other factions
Stonewardens serve as the primary enforcers for the Council of Stone and collaborate closely with Lorewardens during civil disputes and oaths of record. While they maintain respectful relations with the Minthari, tensions occasionally flare with mining enclaves that encroach upon sacred strata or disturb sealed spiritual zones.
Notable figures
- Stonewarden Meraki-Ak – Veteran of the East Cavern Collapse; current stabilizer of the Stonehold Tunnels.
- Warden-Scribe Talun-Esh – Known for sealing the Shardstorm Breach without violence through harmonic redirection.
- Hulr-Run – Holds the longest recorded oath of uninterrupted service.
Traditions and practices
All Stonewardens undergo the Rite of Foundation, a trial of endurance, silence, and stone-bonding within a sealed echo chamber. Their tools are custom-forged to their harmonic imprint and sealed within vaults bearing their name and lineage glyph.
They observe the Cycle of Vigilance—a 14-day span of total silence and subterranean rotation—designed to renew alignment with the city’s pulse. When called into action, Stonewardens rarely speak; instead, they communicate through taps or gestures.
Legacy and influence
The Stonewardens are widely regarded as the living will of Terasil’s deep laws. Though not expansionist or aggressive, their interventions are often seen as final—neither questioned nor undone. Their commitment to restraint, paired with overwhelming force when needed, has preserved the sanctity of Kar-Thal and its surrounding territories for centuries.
More than a military order, the Stonewardens are an enduring embodiment of Orasian philosophy: to guard not only with strength, but with silence, memory, and precision.
