Geography of Khamria
The geography of Khamria consists of arid basins separated by high mountain ranges. Khamria occupies the center of Méniail. It is bordered by Gosterra to the northwest, Balúrail to the southwest, Aráinia to the north, Orinilure to the northeast, and Arezilur to the east, with the Southern Ocean to the south. It surrounds the Domain of Yairan, which is a separate region.
Subregions
Baviare Vale
The Baviare Vale is a highland basin between the Ilergierze Mountains to the west and the Așdilu Mountains to the east. It is the most populated part of Khamria and contains Lavierin, the largest city. The Vale is divided into five geographic areas:
- Vale’s Edge, a plateau along the foot of the Ilergierze Mountains
- the Northern Expanse, an uninhabited grassland in the north
- the Ingur Basin, the low ground around Lake Ingur
- the Lurțilia, a savanna in the south crossed by the Ingur River
- the Binzir Hills, uplands north of Lavierin
The main overland entrance to the Vale is the Tulclurius Pass, at Lepigisţil in the southwest.
Barerte Waste
The Barerte Waste is a desert basin between the Bogh Mountains to the northwest and the Ilergierze Mountains to the southeast. Most of it is dry and without surface water. The Saltmirror Basin, a salt flat, lies at its northern end. Lake Hek lies in the southwest, beside a dried lakebed, and a second lake lies in the north.
Şire Bişit
Şire Bişit is an area of broken, faulted ground in eastern Khamria, beyond the Așdilu Mountains. Earthquakes are frequent, and the surface is uninhabited.
Mountain ranges
Four ranges divide and enclose the subregions.
- The Așdilu Mountains form a ring around the Domain of Yairan and the eastern wall of the Baviare Vale. Lavierin and Găreag are built on their western side.
- The Ilergierze Mountains run from southwest to northeast between the Barerte Waste and the Baviare Vale. They are volcanic in origin. Yacinţa lies on their eastern slopes.
- The Bogh Mountains form the northwestern border with Gosterra. They are crossed by a northern pass at Iparbinza and a southern pass at Goterleni.
- The Mazissage Mountains run along the south of Khamria and continue west along the border with Balúrail. They are covered in mist for most of the year.
Coast
Khamria has two stretches of coast on the Southern Ocean. In the south, the Mazissage Mountains descend directly into the sea. In the east, a narrow strip of coast lies beside the Domain of Yairan, south of Şire Bişit.
Rivers and lakes
Surface water is scarce. The Ingur River rises in the Mazissage Mountains near Lepigisţil, descends Senerge Falls at Uryaurire, and flows east across the Lurțilia to Lake Ingur. The city of Ingur stands on the lake's eastern shore. The lakes of the Barerte Waste are the only other large bodies of water.
Subterranean features
The Deep Roads, a network of passages built by the Namuril, run beneath the mountain ranges and connect the cities of the Baviare Vale to one another and to Orinilure.
Climate
Khamria is arid. Summers are hot, winters are cool, and rainfall is low. The Așdilu Mountains block moisture from the west and leave the land east of them drier still. The Mazissage Mountains receive more moisture than the rest of the region. The highest peaks are cold throughout the year.
Flora and fauna
Vegetation is sparse outside the Baviare Vale, where highland savanna supports grasses, shrubs, and scattered trees. Animal life includes large grazing herbivores, long-legged birds, and predatory cats.
