Introduction

Gurverde is a state in the east of the League of Balúrail, in the Eastern Highlands. Chartered in 786 ME, it is the most recently added state of the League. Its capital and largest city is Arremíria, on Lake Arrerem. Gurverde has about 300,000 people and is known for its mines, its timber and its many lakes.

Etymology

Gurverde comes from the Tuzquês gurur berdear, "green highlands".

History

The Tuzquão first settled Gurverde in the late 500s ME, moving up the Diate River from the lowlands. Figo, the river port at the meeting of the Diate and the Cumaro, was founded in 598 ME. Iron was found in the Sirilquito Hills, and smelting began around Lake Arrerem in 656 ME, when Arremíria was founded. Tabau was founded on Lake Diate in 702 ME.

Gold was discovered in the hills around Arremíria in 771 ME, and settlement grew quickly. Gurverde was chartered as a state in 786 ME. Beltara was founded in 795 ME and Terizado in 830 ME. In 889 ME the railway reached Arremíria.

Geography

Gurverde covers 40,650 mi² (105,283 km²) of the Eastern Highlands, a country of forested foothills rising east to the Mazissage Mountains. It borders Ivaiê to the west along the Cumaro River, the Eimbuver to the north along the Tozinhis Hills, and Gostiria to the south. To the east the Mazissage Mountains separate it from Khamria; at its northeastern corner, near Mount Sabem, it meets Gosterra.

The Diate River rises in Lake Diate, which is fed by the Emera, Pacagua and Anza rivers, and flows southwest through the state past Craol, Polista and Arpe to Figo, where it is joined by the Cumaro. Lake Beltara lies in the northwest, south of the Emera Forest, and the Tonhoa River flows south from it to the Cumaro. Lake Arrerem, the largest lake in Balúrail, lies on the southern border. The Rona, Raldo and Nagua rivers flow into it from the mountains, and the Nagua forms the border with Gostiria. Lake Bata lies on the same border, between Aribo and Mau. A group of smaller lakes, among them Isto, Amerne, Uelo and Ombo, lies west of the Diate below Lake Diate.

The Sirilquito Hills rise north of Arremíria and Lake Arrerem. Mount Burite stands in the Mazissage Mountains east of them. No road crosses the mountains from Gurverde. They can be crossed on foot at a few difficult passes, among them one northeast of Arremíria, but the only established road to Khamria runs through Gostiria.

Climate

Gurverde has long, cold winters with extended freezing periods and short, warm summers. It is drier than the coast. The proximity of the Mazissage Mountains causes frequent fog and clouds, and the foothills grow colder toward the mountains.

Flora and Fauna

Goverment and Politcs

Gurverde is led by a governor, currently Guivuo Ospero, who sits at Arremíria. The League maintains Fort Miza in the Sirilquito Hills northwest of the capital.

Economy

Gurverde's economy rests on mining and timber. Iron is mined in the Sirilquito Hills and smelted around Lake Arrerem. Gold has been mined since 771 ME, mostly in the hills around Arremíria, Pordiz and Cassa. The forests supply timber. Figo is the state's river port, where goods are loaded onto barges on the Diate, and since 889 ME the railway has carried the goods of Gurverde from Arremíria to the ports of Gostiria.

Demographics

Gurverde has about 300,000 inhabitants, most of them Tuzquão. Nearly two-thirds live in its cities, most of them along the Diate and around the lakes. Mifajene live in Gurverde in greater numbers than in most states, though they have no villages of their own there.

Transportation

Roads link the cities of the Diate with Lake Beltara in the northwest and with Arremíria and Terizado in the southeast. Barges work the Diate below Lake Diate. Arremíria and Aribo are the only cities in Gurverde on the railway: one line runs from Arremíria through Aribo to Mau and the Diate, and another runs south from Arremíria to Vota Bay in Gostiria.

Culture

Mavai is the main spiritual influence on the Tuzquão of Gurverde. The House of Dañi, the home of Dañi, the Ascendant Spirit of mist and fog, stands high in the Mazissage Mountains on the border with Khamria.
