Introduction
The Tuzquão are a race of humans who inhabit the swamp realm of Balúrail. They descend from the Yendea, the original humans of Dalel, who lived on the island of Haberria. Following the Great Migration that drew most humans away from Haberria around the year 0 of the Modern Era (ME), the ancestors of the Tuzquão were among the peoples who eventually dispersed across the wider world. The Tuzquão themselves arrived in Balúrail around the year 201 ME, settling first in the town of Saindo before expanding throughout the region and founding their capital, Têr, in 210 ME. Today, they are organized under the League of Balúrail, a government known for its secretive structure.
Origin and Nature
The Tuzquão share the common ancestry of all humans, descending from the Yendea. They trace their origin to the period after the Great Migration of the early Modern Era and settled Balúrail about two centuries later.
History
The ancestors of the Tuzquão came to Balúrail by sea from the Kingdom of Bóinbile in Gosterra in 201 ME and established themselves in the town of Saindo. Their settlements were colonial towns of the Kingdom until 289 ME, when they declared independence as the League of Balúrail. From this foothold, they expanded throughout Balúrail, bringing them into repeated conflict with the Mifajene, the region's native inhabitants. The consolidation of Tuzquão settlement was marked by the founding of the capital city of Têr in 210 ME, nine years after their arrival.
Biology and Physical Traits
The Tuzquão complexions tend to be cool-toned and pale. Faces are typically broad and strong-featured. Eyes are most often light, ranging from pale blue to grey and green. Hair tends to be light in coloring, is commonly straight or only lightly waved, and fine in texture.
The Tuzquão tend to be taller than the average human. Males typically range from 5 ft 9 in to 6 ft (175–183 cm), while females are slightly shorter, generally ranging from 5 ft 6 in to 5 ft 10 in (168–178 cm). Both sexes generally have sturdy, broad-shouldered builds.
Abilities and Osia
The Tuzquão have no innate Osia. However, their proximity to the Ascendant Spirits Mavai, Tahami, and Sitaivu, who all live in Balúrail, gives them an advantage should they seek to learn the domains associated with these spirits.
Culture and Society
Governance
The Tuzquão have a distinctive governing structure. The League of Balúrail controls almost all of Balúrail, which is in turn controlled by a secret society known as the Society of Truth. Membership in and induction into the Society are closely guarded secrets, and the Society governs through edicts issued by figureheads placed at all levels of government. Its members' identities are not publicly known, though they are thought to be prominent figures drawn from both the merchant and political classes. No one believes the Society's members engage directly in politics, and a clear separation is maintained between the public figureheads and the Society's members.
Temperament and social life
While not isolationists, the Tuzquão tend to be close-knit and highly loyal to their villages, towns, and local communities. As a consequence of the opaque governing structure, the general population tends toward apathy regarding the government, and most individuals are disinclined to enter politics, particularly given the absence of elections or democratic reforms.
Owing to the influence and proximity of the Ascendant Spirit Mavai, the Tuzquão are widely characterized as somewhat conspiratorial and secretive. This same inclination to keep secrets and mysteries close also fosters a strong drive to seek out answers and truths wherever possible, a tension that is held to produce conflict both internally, among the Tuzquão themselves, and externally, in their dealings with others.
Notable Individuals
Notable Settlements
Têr, the capital of the League of Balúrail, is by far the largest city, with a population of approximately 300,000. The second largest city is Ivaiê, the capital of the state of the same name, with a population of roughly 94,000.
Among the other state capitals, Lusbá, the capital of Gostiria, has a population of about 55,000. Arremíria is the capital of the state of Gurverde, with a population of about 45,000. Ezinco, the capital of the state of Ezinco, is the smallest of the state capitals, with a population of approximately 30,000.
Spirituality and Beliefs
Parethinism is the state religion of the League. According to official figures, the majority of Tuzquão follow it, although the precise number of worshippers is unknown. Many of the larger towns contain churches devoted to the religion. As with much of Tuzquão public life, the secrecy that characterizes the wider society extends to religious participation, leaving official membership figures difficult to verify.
