Origin and Nature

Ancestral spirits typically arise through mortal belief, when a Mature spirit gains enough recognition and cultural importance to evolve into a fully realized, independent entity.

This process is driven by faith, myth, and reverence, rivers, mountains, storms, and deified figures that have become part of a society's core mythology.

The nature of ancestral spirits

Ancestral spirits are far more powerful than Mature spirits. They embody ideas, places, or cultural concepts that have become central to the identity of entire communities or regions. Their power is fueled by collective belief and they are often viewed as deities, revered as the ultimate authorities over the aspects of life they govern.

Ancestral spirits are capable of creating their own realms, influencing the landscape of Adaris, or even directly intervening in the affairs of mortals. They can shape the weather, alter natural events, or manipulate time, depending on the nature of their domain. Many ancestral spirits take on roles as patrons of specific communities, regions, or cultures, acting as guardians, protectors, or even vengeful forces when wronged.

Influence and Manipulation in Osia

While osiari frequently interact with nascent and Mature spirits, Ancestral spirits remain largely beyond direct influence or control. Their immense consciousness and autonomy make them resistant to manipulation, and most osiari recognize that attempting to command them is futile—if not outright dangerous.

• Building Relationships Instead of Control – Rather than subjugation, powerful osiari may seek communion with an Ancestral spirit. This involves rituals of attunement, offerings, or acts of devotion meant to gain the spirit’s favor or guidance.
• Gaining Insight, Not Authority – Those who approach an Ancestral spirit with wisdom and respect may receive visions, blessings, or cryptic messages. However, Ancestral spirits do not act as mere tools for the osiari’s will; their aid is given only when it aligns with their own nature and purpose.
• The Risk of Provocation – Ancestral spirits are neither inherently benevolent nor malevolent, but offending or defying them can have consequences. Those who desecrate sacred sites, violate longstanding taboos, or attempt to forcefully bind an ancestral spirit may invoke their wrath.

As a Mature spirit becomes deeply entrenched in myths, traditions, and worship, it accumulates power and autonomy. Eventually, it transcends its previous state and becomes an Ancestral spirit, embodying a concept, place, or force on a grander scale.
