Named in honor of Surn-Zal, an early civic chronicler and architect of stillness rites, the district is where Duranthi citizens gather for sacred observances, rites of renewal, and carved remembrance during seasonal or seismic cycles.

The district functions as Kar-Thal’s civic sanctuary, a space where personal reflection and communal ritual meet in solemn silence. It hosts Veshariin (Days of Holding) gatherings, ancestral oath renewals, and carved declarations open to all castes and lineages. While not administrative or residential, Surn’s Refuge is integral to the city’s spiritual rhythm and cultural cohesion.
History
Surn’s Refuge was among the first deep chambers discovered during Kar-Thal’s downward expansion. Originally a natural mineral hollow, it was preserved and expanded through patient excavation under the direction of early stone-keepers. Its central pillar ring and basin floor were left uncarved—believed to be shaped by Oras himself. The district gained prominence after the first Cycle Concord, when the Council of Stone formalized ritual pauses for civic and ancestral realignment citywide.

- The Memory Basin – A bowl-shaped depression surrounded by uncut mineral shelves. Used for Cycle Day observances and stone-dusting rites.

Visitors to Surn’s Refuge remove all metal implements and enter in silence. During Veshariin, entire lineages gather to perform inscriptional rites, where names, memories, and renewed oaths are carved onto prepared slabs or offered in stone dust.
Offerings of crushed mineral or pigment shards are placed within the basin’s edge. Stillness is considered sacred between rites, and footsteps are softened by ritual coverings.
