Introduction
Arrêre is a port city in the state of Ivaié in the League of Balúrail. It is located on Castas Bay at the mouth of the Goin River, approximately 95 miles northwest of Ivaié. With a population of about 25,000, it is one of the larger cities in the League. Its economy is based on fishing, trade, and shipping, and it serves as the principal point of transfer between seagoing vessels and river traffic on the Goin.
Etymology
The name Arrêre is a contraction of the Tuzquês words arrê, meaning "fish," and erre, meaning "settlement" or "town."
History
Arrêre was founded in 295 M.E. as a fishing settlement at the mouth of the Goin River. Its fishermen supplied fish to Teher and to other settlements along the coast, and for its first centuries the settlement remained small and dependent on the fishery.
From the 5th century M.E., the settlement's position between Castas Bay and the Goin River made it a transfer point for goods moving between the coast and the interior. Seagoing vessels unloaded their cargo at Arrêre, where it was transferred to smaller river barges for the journey upriver. Because much of the lower Goin passes through marshland, barges were commonly hauled against the current by teams of laborers, and barge hauling became one of the city's principal occupations. Arrêre was chartered as a city in 618 M.E. In 790 M.E., a trade exchange was established to regulate the buying and selling of goods passing through the port, and it remains the center of the city's commercial activity.
Geography
Arrêre is situated on the western coast of Balúrail, on Castas Bay at the mouth of the Goin River, within the Western Lowlands. Ivaié lies approximately 95 miles to the southeast along the coast. The Belargae Swamp lies near the city.
Economy
The economy of Arrêre is based on fishing, trade, and shipping. Fishing, from which the city takes its name, remains a significant industry. The city's main economic role, however, is as a point of transfer between sea and river trade: goods arriving by sea are transferred to river vessels for transport up the Goin River, and goods from the interior are loaded onto seagoing vessels for export. The city's trade exchange serves as the center of this commerce.
Transportation
Arrêre is served by both sea and river traffic. Its harbor on Castas Bay accommodates seagoing vessels engaged in coastal trade, while the Goin River provides a route into the interior for river barges.
