Introduction

Ir-Tarin is a small Deep Road waystation situated between Zarik-Val and the monastic settlement of Surnaketh. It serves as the sole structured pause point along the 55-mile route, offering rest and water for those traveling deeper into the range.

Geography

The outpost is carved into a bend of the tunnel where cooler air accumulates and condensation forms along the walls. A shallow basin naturally collects fresh water in the chamber’s center. The space is dimly lit by mineral veins embedded in the stone, and shelves carved into the walls provide seating or storage for passing travelers.

History

Originally shaped by early Deep Road crews, Ir-Tarin was conceived not as a dwelling but as a place to step away from one’s journey. Over time, minor additions were made—a water catchment, smoothed benches, and a few carved stones to mark common routes.

Functions and Features

  • Reflection Pool – A shallow basin fed by condensation, used for drinking, washing, or resting near.
  • Step Ledge – A ring of stone seating along the chamber walls, offering rest and quiet space.
  • Entry Stones – Three low pillars at the exit path, commonly touched by travelers as they depart.

Defenses and Watch

The station is unguarded and unwalled. On rare occasions, a passing warden or initiate en route to Surnaketh may stay briefly, but there is no formal post assigned to the location.

Threats and Dangers

The area is considered stable, though minor tremors and occasional light distortion have been noted. Some suspect the station lies near an unused spur, though no confirmed breach has occurred.
