Introduction
The Barerte Waste is a desert basin between the Bogh Mountains and the Ilergierze Mountains in western Khamria. Most of it is held by the Mundari. Tribes of Arânzeni live in its north and south. The Arânzeni Confederation claims the Waste but does not control it.
History
The ancestors of the Arânzeni crossed the Bogh Mountains into the Barerte Waste in 300 ME and went on from there to the Baviare Vale. When the Arânzeni Confederation was formed in 450 ME, the tribes of the Waste refused to join and kept their traditional way of life.
Geography
Most of the Barerte Waste is dry and without surface water. The Saltmirror Basin, a salt flat, lies at its northern end. Lake Aregarit lies in the southwest, beside a dried lakebed. The Bogh Mountains are crossed by a northern pass at Iparbinze and a southern pass at Goterleni.
Goverment and Politcs
The Barerte Waste has no single government. The Order of Servants, the political body of the Mundari, holds most of it. The Arânzeni tribes of the north and south are separate from one another and have no common government. They are on reasonable terms with the Confederation, and both are in conflict with the Order of Servants.
Demographics
About 30,000 Mundari live in small bands in the mountains of the Waste. About 60,000 Arânzeni live in the tribes of the north and south.
