Introduction
The Yeege Kingdom, or simply Yeege, is an absolute monarchy of the Zapaha in Gosterra, on the northwestern coast of Méniail. It governs the whole of the Yeege Peninsula, the mountainous northern end of Gosterra, together with its offshore islands. It was founded in 1000 BME, when the Zapaha colonies of the peninsula came under the senior queen at Nenye Nuuxoo, which remains its capital and largest settlement. It is ruled by the Dhenne Dynasty, and the current senior queen is Nyekee Dhenne. It is divided into three duchies and has about 150,000 inhabitants, all of them Zapaha.
History
Before the kingdom
The Zapaha were created by Ettal, the Ascendant Spirit of cliffs and shores, in the Age of Ascendance, and have lived on the cliffs of the peninsula ever since. Their colonies were at first independent of one another, each under its own queen.
Founding
In 1000 BME the colonies of the peninsula came under the queen of Edhaa, who took her seat at Nenye Nuuxoo as senior queen. The Dhenne Dynasty has held Edhaa, and with it the crown of Yeege, since the founding.
Relations with humans
Humans landed in Gosterra in the Great Migration in 0 ME. Relations between them and the Zapaha were tense but peaceful from the start, and the two have never been at war. Humans have never settled the peninsula: the Yeege Mountains make it hard to reach, the Zapaha defend it with Osia, Ettal is fiercely protective of it, and humans have been reluctant to make war on so small a people. Soon after the Kingdom of Bóinbile was founded in 151 ME, it recognized Yeege and agreed by treaty that its subjects would not settle the peninsula.
Yeege stayed neutral in the War of the Southern Duchies (640–645 ME), which created the Heialdyn Stratocracy. The Zapaha do not by nature interfere in the affairs of other peoples, and the war did not touch the peninsula.
Geography
Yeege covers about 17,214 mi² (44,584 km²), the whole of the Yeege Peninsula, which extends northeast from central Gosterra. The Yeege Mountains form the peninsula's backbone; their peaks include Mount Guse, Mount Meena and Mount Croan, which stands on the southern border with the Kingdom of Bóinbile. The coasts are lined with cliffs, on which most Zapaha settlements are built. The northernmost point is Point Cell. Offshore lie the islands of Pappii, Luupe and Alloo.
Goverment and Politics
The senior queen of Yeege is an absolute monarch. She is the queen of the Duchy of Edhaa and rules from Nenye Nuuxoo.
The kingdom is divided into three duchies, each ruled by its own queen under the senior queen:
| Duchy | Location | Capital |
|---|---|---|
| Kappee | North of the peninsula | Reke Edhoo |
| Edhaa | East, from Mount Guse south along the east coast | Nenye Nuuxoo |
| Eluu | West, south to the border with the Kingdom of Bóinbile | Keekale |
Yeege keeps envoys in the Kingdom of Bóinbile, the Heialdyn Stratocracy and the Aráinian Republic.
Each colony keeps guards armed with bows, and Zapaha skilled on the Path of Ettal defend the cliffs. Yeege has no navy and its people do not use firearms.
Economy
The Zapaha are skilled farmers, and their cliff gardens and orchards are tended by large numbers of workers. They also keep bees for honey. Weaving is their most esteemed craft, and Zapaha tapestries are valued well beyond the peninsula. Yeege trades with the Kingdom of Bóinbile across the border, selling tapestries and fruit and buying metal goods. Nenye Nuuxoo, on the east coast, is the only port.
Demographics
Yeege has about 150,000 inhabitants, about 9 per square mile (3 per km²), all of them Zapaha. Nearly all are female; new Zapaha hatch only from eggs laid by the queens.
| Settlement | Duchy | Population |
|---|---|---|
| Nenye Nuuxoo | Edhaa | 15,000 |
| Reke Edhoo | Kappee | 8,000 |
| Keekale | Eluu | 7,000 |
| Palgee | Eluu | 3,000 |
| Xarraa Eelee | Kappee | 3,000 |
| Nerqee | Kappee | 3,000 |
Some 30 small towns of about 1,500 people each account for about 45,000 more, and the rest, about 66,000, live in small cliff colonies.
Culture
Zapaha settlements are built as small castles and towers on the cliff sides. Weaving is the most esteemed craft, and tapestries are the principal art. Their favorite music is played on pipes, and they play other wind instruments as well. Their language is Eheeny.
The Zapaha revere Ettal as their creator, and also Yavi, the Primordial Spirit of air. They do not follow any of the human religions.
Native Spirits
Ettal, the Ascendant Spirit of cliffs and shores, created the Zapaha and is fiercely protective of the peninsula. His home, the House of Ettal, stands on the western side of the Duchy of Kappee.
