Introduction:
Tahami Swamp is a large swamp in the west of the Mifajene Reservation, in the Western Lowlands of Balúrail. It covers 1,619 mi² (4,193 km²) behind Dozolo Bay, between the north coast and the Ayellaye River. The House of Tahami, the home of Tahami, the Ascendant Spirit of bogs and swamps, stands within it.
Etymology:
The swamp is named after Tahami, who lives in it, not far from the place where he first emerged.
Geology:
The swamp dates from the Great Erosion. When Aahi flooded the low ground of Balúrail and Yairan hardened the earth to halt the erosion, the trapped water turned the lowlands into a vast mudflat. Tahami arose from this trapped water, and over time the mudflat divided into the swamps, bogs and lakes of the region. The Tahami Swamp lies where he first emerged.
Ecology:
The swamp is made mostly of peat formed by Sejene, a peat moss, with reeds and saw grass on the wetter ground. Flora and Fauna of Balúrail
Historical Significance:
Cultural Significance:
The Mifajene, whom Tahami created, revere him as their father and their god, and the swamp around his house is the center of that reverence. Each year, in spring, during the wettest part of the year, they hold a festival in his honor. Some humans travel to the House of Tahami to study the Path of Tahami.
Settlements:
The towns of Gemwezo and Ded'elcita stand on the northern edge of the swamp and Selomleso on its southeastern edge, linked by a road around its eastern end. Nesham lies to the west, between the swamp and the coast. The villages of Tele and Besejen lie on the northern edge, Fehu on the eastern edge and Rete on the southern edge. Nesfehu is the only village inside the swamp, south of the House of Tahami.
