Geography of Arezilur
The geography of Arezilur is dominated by the Arezilur Desert, a sea of sand dunes that covers most of the region. Arezilur occupies the eastern part of Méniail. It is bordered by Orinilure to the west and northwest, Khamria to the southwest, and Jesselsom to the northeast, with ocean to the north, east, and south.
Borders
The Orinilure Mountains form the western border of Arezilur. In the southwest, the Aurită Mountains lie along the border, and Mount Iglilej is their highest peak. In the northeast, Beilisia extends to the neck of land that joins Arezilur to Jesselsom.
Subregions
Arezilur Desert
The Arezilur Desert, also called the Dune Sea, covers the interior of the region from the northern coast to the southern coast. It consists of sand dunes that move continuously with the wind, so that landmarks and routes do not remain fixed. Oases are scattered through the desert, and caravan routes run between them. Ruins are reported beneath the dunes.
Beilisia
Beilisia, or the Glass Fields, lies in the northeast, between the desert and Jesselsom. Heat from Jesselsom has fused the sand into ridges, plains, and spires of glass. The Beilisco Mountains, a range of glass spires, run through it. The ground is covered with sharp fragments and is difficult to cross. Beilisia is the source of the region's raw glass and obsidian.
Bugluria
Bugluria, the "border lands", is a strip of rocky desert in the southwest, between the Aurită Mountains and the dunes. Its terrain is dry, stony ground with sparse vegetation and no dunes. It is the main overland approach to Arezilur from the west.
Matarfa Coast
The Matarfa Coast is the eastern coast of Arezilur, running south from Gristilia Bay. The dunes of the desert extend to the shoreline, and the coast is broken by several bays. The shifting sand makes harbors unstable, and settlements along the coast are small.
Coasts and waters
Arezilur has coasts on three sides. Gristilia Bay, on the eastern side at the southern end of Beilisia, opens to the Southern Ocean and is the site of the region's only major port. There are no permanent rivers. Fresh water is found at oases.
Climate
Arezilur lies in one of the hottest rings of Dalel. Days are very hot and nights are cold, and temperatures can fall below freezing after dark. Rain is rare and can be absent for years. Sandstorms are frequent and can last from minutes to days. In Beilisia, strong winds carry glass fragments, producing storms known as glasstorms. Mirages are common throughout the desert.
Flora and fauna
Plant and animal life is sparse and adapted to heat, drought, and moving sand. Most animals are nocturnal or burrow beneath the surface during the day.
Settlements
- Attemberta, in Bugluria at the western edge of the dunes, is the last major settlement before the desert.
- Gristilia, on Gristilia Bay at the southern end of Beilisia near the border with Jesselsom, is the largest city and only major port.
- Arihis's Quarry, in Beilisia north of Gristilia, is a glass-mining settlement.
- Mireria is a city that moves within the Arezilur Desert.
